Obituary:

Carol Jean Cortney was born June 6, 1958, at the Chanute Air Force Base, outside of Champaign Illinois, to Joyce (Gates) and Bill Cortney. She was the second born of three girls and called Jean by her friends and family. Her older sister Kim Cross is currently living in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her younger sister Marcee Schnieders is currently living in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Since her dad was in the Air Force, the beginning of her life was spent moving to numerous states with her family and also England and Germany before moving to Seward in 1972.

Jean attended and graduated from Seward High School in 1976. She later went on to attend Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska and received an associate’s degree in accounting and business. She worked for most of her life in the financial aid department of several community colleges and worked her way up to the director level. In recent years, she went back to college and received her R.N. degree and worked as a registered nurse at Palomar hospital in Escondido, CA.

Shortly after high school, she gave birth to her first son, Jeffrey Lynn Boldt Jr. on January 26, 1977. After living several years in Seward, she moved to Lincoln and shortly after gave birth to her second son, Jonathan Patrick Klausen on October 22, 1982. On September 20, 1986 she married William (Bill) Winchell and moved out to San Diego with her sons. It was in San Diego that she remained married to Bill for 20 years and together they raised her two sons. Other than the eventual death of her parents, these were very happy years. Although she eventually divorced Bill, they remained very close and on good terms. On May 28, 2008 she married Jim Sweeney in the romantic location of Kauai, Hawaii and together they lived in San Diego. Jim had worked as a respiratory therapist and together they could commiserate on the trials and tribulations of the health care profession.

As her children grew older and moved away from home, she developed a very deep bond with several golden retrievers. The first dog was named Hunter and was later eulogized as “The World’s Best Dog”. A few years after Hunter’s death, she and Bill adopted dogs Sadie Mae and Boomer. These dogs provided many years of joy and comfort.

Her older son Jeff was married to Rebecca Silvasy on July 25, 1999 and had three daughters: Brenna, Krysta and Ariana. Jean found great joy in being a grandmother and finally getting the girls she never had. She particularly enjoyed taking them to the beach and the pool and also “girl time” with things like shopping, playing dress-up and getting their hair done.
Her loving nature made her very loved by her family and friends. She will remain forever loved and cherished by all that knew her.
