Jim was born on May 2, 1949 to Kenneth and Virginia (Kelly) Carlson in Kearney, Nebraska. After graduation from Kearney High School in 1967, Jim attended Kearney State College where he earned his Masters degree in Industrial Technology in 1977. On June 6, 1971, Jim was united in marriage to Mary K. Nelson in Minden, Nebraska. He worked as a Teacher of Industrial Arts at Centennial Public School for 31 years where he also was an instructor for driversí education. Additional activities as a teacher included coaching in baseball and track, a line judge for high school volleyball and the All-Star matches. For 8 years following retirement, he worked at Breeza Fans, and many different summer jobs throughout the years. Jim loved spending time with his family and friends. In his free time he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and woodworking. He liked to work on computers and was a man of many talents in many areas. Jim liked to socialize, lending a listening ear when others needed to be heard. He always had a smile on his face and considered someone with a frown as a challenge. Everyone was his friend. He never knew a stranger and was willing to help anyone in need, stopping whatever he was doing to help. Jim was a member of Boy Scouts growing up, which led to active involvement in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in Utica. He was also an active mentor in 4-H including Superintendent of the Poultry Barn of Seward County Fair for a number of years. He was baptized and confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Kearney, Nebraska. He was an active member of United Methodist Church in Utica since 1985, serving in many different roles including various boards. He was an active member of The Jaycees, Lions Club, Senior Center Board and Bluebirds Across Nebraska. Jim passed away on October 29, 2017 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 68 years, 5 months and 27 days. He is survived by his wife, Mary Carlson, Utica, Nebraska; mother-in-law, Elliene Christensen of Minden, Nebraska; daughters, Tricia (John) Hakonson, Lexington, Nebraska, Jana (Wes) Harens, Julesburg, Colorado; son, Trent (Erica Smith) Carlson, Utica, Nebraska; grandchildren, Thomas, Aaron and Micah Hakonson, Kaden and Noah Harens; brother, Dick (Linda) Carlson, Grand Island, Nebraska; and many wonderful friends. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth & Virginia Carlson; fathers-in-law, Marvin Nelson and Kenneth Christensen.
