Lucy Bird Honig was born on February 20, 1936 to Alzie and Lucy E. (Harris) Schanefelt in McFarland, Kansas. She attended Pampa Elementary School in Pampa, Texas and graduated from Alma High School in Alma, Kansas in 1954. She then attended a short training program at Concordia Teachers College and began teaching in a one room school house in Hope, Kansas where she met her future husband. On June 24, 1956, Lucy was united in marriage to Martin L. Honig in Harrington, Kansas. Then both taught school in Battle Creek, Nebraska and then in Sidney, Nebraska. While out there Lucy took night classes at Northern Colorado University where she received her Associates Degree. Lucy was a teacher for most of her life. She taught in Hope, Kansas, Sidney, Nebraska, Bridgeport, Nebraska. In 1984 she went back to school and received her Bachelors Degree from Concordia, graduating with her daughter Vicki. They were placed in Vernon Center, Minnesota and later at Grace Lutheran School in Chicago, Illinois. After retirement from teaching Lucy worked at the Milford Library as a librarian which was perfect for her. Later she worked in child care as a teacher at Memorial Hospital. In her free time she enjoyed sewing, especially Barbie doll and American Girl doll clothes. Lucy moved into Ridgewood Care Center Alzheimers Unit in 2012 and lived there for the past seven years. Lucy passed away on September 30, 2019 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 10 days. She is survived by her son, James (Sheryl) Honig, Ellison Bay, Wisconsin; daughters, Vicki (Rod) Woebbecke, Seward, Nebraska, Valerie (Len) Mikles, Columbus, Ohio, Virginia “Ginny” Gray (Jim Williams), Minneapolis, Minnesota; grandchildren, Chris (Liz) Honig, Tim (Stacy)Honig, Stephanie Woebbecke, Gretchen (Travis) Pollak, Ethan Mikles, Laurel Mikles, Keith Gray, Jadzia Gray, Morgan Gray; great grandchildren, Hanah Honig, Logan Pollak; sister-in-law, Prissy Schanefelt, Gallup, New Mexico; brothers-in-law, Gary (Darlene) Schmidt, Illinois, Harvey (Jean) Honig, Wisconsin; sisters-in-law, Eunice Filar, Florida, Lillian (Ken) Millman, Florida. Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Alzie and Lucy Schanefelt; husband, Martin Honig; brothers, Porter H. Brooks and wife, Norma, Vienna, Virginia, Perry Schanefelt, Gallup, New Mexico; great granddaughter, Eliana Honig.
