Fern Hoffer Obituary

Fern Aldine Hoffer peacefully passed away on May 19, 2024, in Lincoln, Nebraska at the age of 93. She was born on May 16, 1931, to William and Genevieve (Lindquist) Christensen in Dannebrog, Nebraska. She attended Stromsburg High School.   On January 18, 1948, Fern was united in marriage to Albert Hoffer in Stromsburg, Nebraska.  Fern and Albert had three children, Mary Jane, Nancy and Michael in Stromsburg. They moved to Santee, California where Fern worked in the Ryan Aircraft cafeteria. In the mid 1950’s they moved to Lincoln, Nebraska and Fern worked as a nurse's aid for several years. She earned her GED the same year her daughters graduated from high school. In Lincoln, Fern and Albert had two more children, William (Bill) and Kristine. Fern then worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company until she retired. Fern and Albert traveled throughout the United States as 'full-timers.' She worked for both Walt Disney World in Florida and Adventure Land in Iowa.

Fern loved to travel and explore state and national parks. She particularly enjoyed watching birds and meeting other campers. She was a talented crafter, especially crocheting. She created beautiful afghans and intricate tablecloths. 

Fern is survived by her sisters Joyce Nelson and Wilma Weeks, and three daughters, Mary Jane Hoffer, Nancy Wurm, and Kristine Hoffer. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Robert Harper, April Ascheman, Jim Wurm, Angela Wurm, Michelle Wurm, Rebecca Hoffer-Davis, Sarah Hoffer-Buchanan, Mamadou N’Diaye and Leila N’Diaye, 22 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Fern was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Hoffer; parents William and Genevieve; brothers Harry Christensen and Dale Christensen; sisters Lela Dean and Mary Ann Hronik. She was also preceded in death by her sons Michael Hoffer and William (Bill) Hoffer; her daughter-in-law Mary Hoffer and son-in-law James Wurm; and her great grandson Logan Ascheman. 

Fern will be interred at Hoffer Cemetery in Gresham, Nebraska. The family will hold a celebration of Fern’s life on July 14, 2024 at Antelope Park (shelter #1) on south 27th street in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1-5:00 pm. See the Fern Hoffer Celebration of Life page on FaceBook for more information.
