Herbert was born on August 14, 1922 to George and Ruth (Grimm) Holtz in Hoskins, Nebraska. He served in the United States Army during World War II from November 9, 1942 to September 24, 1943. He was a medical camp cook. On January 20, 1947, Herbert was united in marriage to Violet Smith at Violet's parents' home in Winside, Nebraska. Herbert and Violet farmed near Winside, Nebraska before moving to Seward in 1965. Herbert then worked at Hughes Brothers Manufacturing for 20 years, retiring in 1984. In his free time Herbert enjoyed carpentry. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Seward, Nebraska. Herbert passed away on October 11, 2017 in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 95 years, 1 month and 27 days. He is survived by his son, Leslie (Deborah) Holtz, Bloomfield, Nebraska; daughter, Ann Marie (Dan) Lovercheck, Lincoln, Nebraska; grandchildren, Shawn Kuchera, Evan (Christal) Kuchera, Randy (Ashley) Holtz, Jeff Holtz (special friend Kendra Cornell); great grandchildren, Kyler Kuchera, Kaylee Kuchera, Aurelia Kuchera, Halle Kuchera, Harper Kuchera, Finley Kuchera, Kinsley Holtz, Autumn Yonke; sisters, Alice Kester, Columbus, Montana, Dorothy Brandt, Paola, Kansas. Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Ruth Holtz; wife, Violet Holtz; brothers, Harold Holtz, Norman Holtz; sister, Arlene Benedict; infant grandson, Travis Holtz.
