Obituary

Janet Doris Durlin, of Seward, was born on June 1, 1938 to William Curtis and Merlene (Buckley) Prout in Denver, Colorado. Janet spent her entire childhood and the majority of her adult life living in Denver and the surrounding foothill communities.  She graduated from South High School in Denver in 1956 and went on to attend Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado from 1957-1958. On June 14, 1959, Janet was united in marriage to Lawrence Durlin at Kirk of Bonnie Brae Church in Denver, Colorado.  The marriage ended in 1981. Janet and Lawrence were blessed with two girls and one boy. Janet enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom raising her three children.  When her youngest child reached high school age she began to work outside of the home.  Her last employment was with the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) Foundation where she processed donations and entered data.  After 22 years at CSM she retired in 2006. Janet had a love for music, of all genres, and she was an accomplished pianist.  Her second passion was for books as she loved to read.  Janet also thoroughly enjoyed the Colorado mountains and fishing for trout, especially with her family.  Janet passed away on February 12, 2023 at Ridgewood Care Facility (Hummingbird Memory Unit) in Seward, Nebraska at the age of 84.  She is survived by her children, Diane (Lyle) Lurz of Utica, Nebraska and Robert Durlin of Bailey, Colorado; grandchildren, Jason Miller (fiancée, Renae Hicks) of Rapid City, South Dakota, Brandon (Sara) Miller of Lincoln, Nebraska, Sarah (Nate) Albright of Lincoln, Nebraska, Cory McDowell of Burgoberbach, Germany, Kyle Durlin of Lakewood, Colorado, Clarissa Bradford of Westminster, Colorado, Mariah (Kacey) Coffee of Loveland, Colorado; step grandchildren, Travis (Shantel) Lurz of Alliance, Nebraska, Brittany (Garrett) Schroeder of Grand Island, Nebraska, Sydney (Derick) Burkhard of Colorado; brother, William B. (Dianne) Prout of Longmont, Colorado; former husband, Lawrence Durlin of Commerce City, Colorado; thirteen great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.  Janet was preceded in death by her daughter, Amy Elizabeth McDowell; parents, William “Curt” and Merlene Prout; sisters, Carol Brown and Mildred “Rae” McDowell; brothers-in-law, Robert Brown and Edward McDowell.
