Karen Elizabeth Langner was born to James and Marjory Langner in Seward, Nebraska on August 16th, 1958. The family moved to Alliance, Nebraska in 1965 where Karen graduated from Alliance High School in 1976. She attended Chadron State College where she graduated with degrees in chemistry and biology in 1980, being one of the first graduates with a perfect 4.0 GPA. She went on to earn her master's degree in biology from UNL. Karen moved to Ames, IA where she worked for Iowa State University for the first half of her career and the USDA for the last 15+ years. Karen loved reading from an early age with varying interests - her most recent being the history of "Frankenstein". She was artistically talented but seldom shared her work with others - you considered yourself special if you were lucky enough to receive one of her beautiful pieces which ranged from punch needle, felting, polymer clay, embroidery, quilting, and drawing. She had a heart for small furries, caring lovingly for a multitude of hamsters, guinea pigs, rats, and her favorite chinchilla, Pi. Neighborhood birds, squirrels and chipmunks feasted on the treats that she provided. Karen was a very private person, however if she allowed you in and you knew her well, you will most remember and miss her heart of gold. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Marjory Langner, and her brother-in-law, Bob Elwell. Karen is survived by three sisters Ellen (Keith) Gardiner (Seward, NE), Nancy Elwell (Amana, IA), Ann (Cory) Mueller (Seward, NE) and numerous nieces and nephews.
