Obituary:

Karen Marie Firnhaber, 70, of Seward passed away far too young in Omaha on August 2, 2015 of complications springing from her chronic Lupus erythematosus.

Karen was born in Fremont, NE to Walter C. and Lula (Jordening) Firnhaber. She was the third child of four, and the only girl born to the couple. Walter was a teacher, and the family moved often during Karen’s childhood. She attended Concordia Teachers College in Seward for a time, then was married to Roger Glawatz. The couple lived in Strasburg, Illinois and Seward during their marriage, and had one son, Peter.

Karen operated a consignment antique shop in her home in the 70s, designed and crafted stained glass windows and wallpapered most of the city at some point. She worked as a nurses’ aide for several years at both Memorial Hospital and Sundermann Home. She was active in the arts in town, a member of the Arts Council in its early stages, and helped direct dramatic productions at the Civic Center. She managed the Heritage Bar for a while, which she enjoyed. Her work as a realtor before she retired was incredibly stressful and disappointing to her, overall, though she was quite good at it.

Karen loved sitting on her porch with friends, coffee with her coffee group, talking about people, garage sales, nice clothes, her house, cats, little kids, traveling, her Raider that she wouldn’t get rid of, being out of the ordinary, escargots, sushi, majolica, and lots of other things. She rarely complained. She could not be told what to do, and did things her own way from start to finish.

She’s survived by her son, his husband James Tipper, and her brothers Donald, Paul and Mark. She was predeceased by her parents and a stillborn son.
